If you intend to stay in stealth while killing a big sleeper, the team must synchronize all hits. It is possible to take out these big variants with four fully charged melee hits. When they are about to wake up, they will throb and flail about, making groaning noises and glowing much brighter. When they are slightly annoyed, they will stretch and make a "clicking" noise, and glowing orange. They can detect these within about a 20 meter in game radius (though gunshots and hitting objects with your hammer can travel much further). Sleepers detect light, movement, and sound. These sleepers have noise and light indications that let you know if they're about to wake up. Your goal is to avoid waking them up, whilst completing the mission objective.
